Theatre designer Laura McEwen and graphic designer Dominic Mallin combine their skills to create three dimensional, mixed-media collages of buildings and landmarks from a bygone era.
Laura has designed many national and international shows, while Dominic has worked with a variety of design agencies. It was in 2013 that they decided to work together on their collaboration We Wonder.
They live in Redland with their two young children and enjoy wandering the streets off Whiteladies Road and cycling across the Downs. Laura also immerses herself within the city’s artistic community through the Centrespace co-operative.
“We love our lifestyle here, combining the buzz of the city with the countryside scenery so close by and an endless list of things to see and do,” they tell Bristol24/7.
Bristol’s beautiful scenery is a constant source of inspiration for Laura and Dominic. Rock’s Garage, available exclusively from our online shop, captures the charm of a unique and beautifully restored garage in Clifton Village. They have played with bold colours and striking lettering to capture its unique personality and history.
“When we first explored Bristol, this stood out on the road as representing an amazing past, and strong links to engineering and Clifton Rocks Railway,” they explain.
“We love discovering new buildings that interest us, especially the unsung heroes with a visual style of their era.”
Once they have chosen their subject, they photograph it from all angles, capturing the detail and unique features. They then experiment with the images digitally and develop a final three dimensional layout, building up their favourite elements. The results are striking pieces full of character, history and personality.
Sales of this artwork will support Brunel’s Other Bridge, a charity raising funds to save Brunel’s swivel bridge in the Cumberland Basin, which is in much need of restoration.
